After a long break due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation in Asia, the 2021Season will get underway this coming weekend in China.
Travel restrictions have created a unique situation which will see the 2021 season commence with the TCR Asia- North Asia Cup being run over three events in China.
The opening two Rounds will be held this coming weekend 7-9 May at the home of the Chinese Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Shanghai International Circuit. Round 3 and 4 will take place at the new Zhuhzhou International Circuit on 11-13 June, followed by a visit to another new venue, the Jiangsu Wan Track on 13-15 August.
The Series will run alongside the TCR China Championship continuing a cooperation which has been successful in the past few seasons.
Following the Jiangsu event, TCR Asia Series will be run over a further three or four events starting in September and incorporating a visit to the prestigious Macau Grand Prix. The dates and venues for these events will be announced in due course as the situation with travel restrictions and the ongoing Covid-19 situation in Asia develops.
“ Due to the ongoing situation here in Asia especially with regards to cross border travel, we are having to be as creative and flexible as possible to put together our Calendar for this season. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm and demand from the Manufacturers, Teams and Competitors for TCR Asia to take place this year and so we are trying to build our plans around this demand. Due to this, we felt that it was extremely important to get underway as soon as possible.” said WSA Asia CEO, David Sonenscher.
As the year progresses there is a clear hope that things will ease due to the impact from the vaccine roll out and other measures being taken by Governments around the World, allowing travel to be a little easier and thus allowing the traditional multi-national entries that have made up the TCR Asia grid since the beginning to attend in full force. Events are being planned in Malaysia, Macau and possibly Thailand.
“We have everything in place for a very strong second half of 2021. We are ready to go from our side with multiple venues and options lined up and the Teams and Drivers are ready as well. We are continuing to monitor the situation on an ongoing basis and will lock it all in as soon as a clear picture starts to form. Our current plan is for September but we are even prepared for a Winter Series if the situation takes a little longer to resolve.” Said Sonenscher.
